For decades the founding generation of the Claremont Companies assembled several farms in the beautiful, bucolic area of western Morris County, New Jersey known as Long Valley (Washington Township). Nearly four hundred acres were acquired beginning in the early 1960’s through the mid 1970’s. Extensive negotiations ensued with various local and county agencies for many years resulting in a major acquisition of approximately 280 acres by the Morris County Parks Commission. Further extensive effort resulted in the rezoning of several parcels and the execution of a developer’s agreement permitting the completion of a tax free exchange of a portion of the Valley land for land on Route 46, ultimately allowing the construction of the Target Center on Route 46 and Long Valley Village in the Valley area and the preservation of an additional adjacent fifty acre parcel.
